Turning Web Page Errors into Web Marketing Opportunities
Find new profits with "404 Page Not Found"
Bruce Arnold's Web Marketing Tips
(Issue 40::RSS Release 1009)
When someone mis-types a URL (web page address) or clicks a bad link to your website, do they get a cold
"404: PAGE NOT FOUND" error message, or a warm invitation to surf your site?
Broken links within your web pages are not only unprofessional but a big turn-off to prospective clients and
customers. Fortunately, that is something you can easily monitor with this free link checker:

You have little if any control, however, over links to your web pages posted on other websites ... or long URLs
that get truncated in emails ... or web surfer typos keyed into browser address bars. And when those miscued
requests for non-existent pages reach your web host, their standard response will likely be an uninviting
"PAGE NOT FOUND" message, telling your prospect to click "Back" and take their business elsewhere.
Is that what happens with your website? It's easy enough to find out. Just open a new web browser window, and
type something like this into your address bar...

...substituting your actual domain name for "yourdomainname.com". Then press "Enter" or click "Go". What do you see?
If what you see is a friendly explanation of how you got where you are, and how to get where you meant to go,
say something like this...

...then you've got this base covered. If not, then a Custom 404 Page might be a simple way for you to
convert hasty-fingered surfers into happy, satisfied customers!
